The Olympic Charter established by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) states in its fundamental principles, "Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life," and, in that spirit, the Olympic and Paralympic Games are more than just sport events; they are festivals of culture. Previous Olympic Games held artistic competitions for works inspired by sport, divided into 5 art forms: music, painting, architecture, sculpture, and literature.
The art competitions were later abolished, and each host country began displaying its own artistic works. Now, the Games represent an opportunity not only to appreciate the artistic traditions and innovative programs of each host country, but to engage in cultural exchange on a global scale as well.
